Established over 20 years ago, Matthews Coach Hire has grown into a major player in the transport industry in Ireland. This consistent growth means they need a stable and scalable IT platform that provides the capacity for key software applications that help to run the business.

Due to Irish transport industry standards and compliance regulations they need to have up to date records on all activity of the buses, their drivers and the routes taken. This data changes on a 24×7 basis but must remain accurate and highly available.

Like any expanding business, Matthews have a growing team of sales, marketing and operational staff (service mechanics). These teams need to communicate effectively, maintain centralised calendars and have the ability to share documents and data across the organisation – while working cost-effectively and within budget.

Our Solution:

Matthews Coach Hire engaged Sync IT as their virtual IT department to carry out a business & technology assessment in order to understand their business, their daily activities and most importantly their expectation of minimal system downtime.

From this assessment, a traditional IT platform was considered – however it would not meet the client’s requirement for scalability and uptime. Instead it was decided, in agreement with the client, that a “hybrid cloud solution” was the most effective option for the business in the long run.

Hybrid Cloud Solution

A new server cluster located in their head office, running Microsoft Windows 2012 with Hyper V turned on, gives the business the platform to host multiple servers and business applications, coupled with automated and monitored backup.

Microsoft Office 365

Office 365 Business Premium & Business Essentials was deployed giving all users the latest version of Word, Excel and Outlook. This is linked to Exchange Online for centralised email and calendar access across the company.

Using the latest version of Office reduces the overall amount of data residing on the server which in turn reduces the amount of time it takes to back up the data. Drivers, sales staff and engineering support staff can now work remotely and have the same access to data, email and calendars as if they were working on-site.
